There's more to Korean hip-hop than Gangnam Style: Jay Park

Singer-rapper Jay Park has his work cut out for him.

He wants to show the world that there is more to Korean hip-hop than a chubby man in sunglasses pretending to ride a horse.

Park, 25, does not deny that South Korean pop music has become an ironic and irresistibly catchy global phenomenon courtesy of Psy's Gangnam Style video, which has received more than 1.2 billion views.

In a telephone interview with Life! from Seoul, where he was in the midst of recording, he says: "Right now, Psy has the biggest song of 2012, the most viewed video ever in history. So of course when people think of Koreans, they're gonna think of Gangnam Style, Psy. I think that's cool. He did his thing and killed it."

The Korean-American, who is based in South Korea, adds: "But I'm definitely gonna come out and show them a different side of K-pop."

He will be in Singapore tomorrow to perform at The Star Theatre, and promises to deliver an intense performance.

"I'm going to be performing maybe 15, 16 songs. You're going to able to see what I can do onstage, the dancin', rappin', and the singin'."

The setlist will also include songs from his recent album, New Breed, and from his mixtape, Fresh Air: Breathe It.

New Breed peaked at No. 1 on the South Korea Gaon Weekly album chart and No. 4 on the Billboard World Albums.

Park has been here so many times that he says in jest: "Singapore is such a small area, I think I've pretty much seen it all."

Last year, he performed at MediaCorp's Star Awards in April, did album promotions in May, and performed at Boyz Nite Out in June.
